Prostate Cancer: Get Surgery?
by Dr. Bruce West
A new study in December 13, 2006, Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) seems to challenge the practice of watchful waiting for older men with prostate cancer. Or does it? Basically the study showed that men between the ages of 65 and 80 who treated their prostate cancer aggressively (with surgery or radiation) were 30% less likely to die from it than those who watch and wait. Of course, this would indicate that aggressive treatment offers a clear advantage.
In the past, watchful waiting has often been the treatment of choice for older men with prostate cancer because it tends to grow so slowly that they will likely die from something else first. This study may now provide the green light for tens of thousands of aggressive and debilitating interventions.
Another Reason for Survival
Yet other experts were not so optimistic. They offered another explanation for why the death rate among treated men was lower—they were probably just healthier. The editorial accompanying the article in JAMA said “there was probably something about these guys that made them more likely to get treated, and that also made them more likely to survive.”
The things that make people stronger and more likely to survive cancer cannot be determined from their medical records alone, which is what was used in the study. The high survival group may have been smarter, more prone to try to get healthier when cancer was discovered, and even more likely to see a doctor early and submit to aggressive treatments.
Many among the experts agree that it was probably not the treatment that prolonged life. Rather it was that these men enjoyed other factors that gave them an advantage. In other words, these men would have survived longer whether they had aggressive treatment or not.
Here is where alternative therapy comes in. After 30 years in this business, I have learned that some people are just tougher, stronger, and more apt to survive cancer. Many of these people employ alternative therapies. And when you employ a phytonutrient protocol and lifestyle changes that treat your cancer as if it were a systemic (throughout your body) disease, your chances of survival are higher.
Let’s face it—surgery is often needed with cancer. Getting the main cancer focus or tumor removed is often necessary. But with prostate cancer, unless you treat the disease as a systemic disease, you are lowering your chances of survival. Removal of the prostate, or radiation of the prostate, treats the disease locally. These treatments ignore the possibility that microscopic seeds of prostate cancer have already spread throughout the body and are just waiting to seed in the bones or somewhere else.
This idea is dismissed by most medical prostate cancer experts. They routinely pronounce with certainty that the prostate cancer is totally localized, or even maintained just in the prostate capsule. Therefore, removal or destruction of the prostate would make you “disease free.” And certainly the immediate PSA decrease to near zero is rewarding. But the shock and sadness return when the PSA begins to rise (often very quickly) after a few years.
Systemic Prostate Cancer
Even though this common phenomenon proves that “completely localized” prostate cancer can already be systemic, this advice and procedure are the medical standard. But for most men, prostate cancer is systemic. And those who survive have enhanced immunity or a response that destroys the cancer cells and seeds, no matter where they migrate in the body.
There is no medical treatment to enhance the body’s natural defensive reaction. Only good health, an effective immune system, and defensive mechanisms in the body (many that we do not understand) can keep you alive after a cancer diagnosis.
Chemotherapy or Phytonutrients?
Chemotherapy is the established medical approach to shrink tumors. It also aims to eradicate migrating cancer cells. Unfortunately, this form of treatment does not have a good track record. Poisoning fast growing cells (such as cancer cells), does not seem to really work. Even the latest “targeted” chemotherapy, which attempts to direct the poison to specific targets, has a poor record.
You simply cannot count on surgery and chemotherapy to survive cancer. The statistics are too dismal. Guy Faguet, one of our nation’s foremost cancer experts, sums up our chemotherapy battle with cancer: “Three decades later, the process of anticancer drug development remains mostly anchored on this century-old, conceptually antiquated, technically inefficient, labor intensive, costly, and low-yield ‘hit and miss’ (mostly miss) screening approach engineered and sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI).”‘
The good news is that you can survive cancer when you use the correct phytonutrient protocols. My own mother is living proof; she is cancer free for over 10 years after a diagnosis of metastatic lung cancer. Offered little chance for long-term survival via standard medical therapies, Mom started a phytonutrient protocol. The rest is history.
Men with prostate cancer can have the same good result. You simply cannot employ surgery and/or radiation alone. Even if you use aggressive procedures, you will still need a phytonutrient protocol to give your body the best odds of seeking out and destroying cancer cells—no matter where they have migrated.
For each type of cancer, and indeed for each type of patient, protocols can be specifically designed. You can also find out exactly what the medical treatments for your specific type of cancer will really do for you. Just go to www.cancerdecisions.com to purchase a report on your type of cancer. The report will give you honest, unsullied, unbiased, hard, cold statistics on just what medical treatments can do for you. It will help you make decisions about whether to pursue these kinds of treatments.
Whether you use surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, or other medical cancer treatments or not, immediately start a phytonutrient protocol. For prostate cancer, we use several products by Standard Process with excellent success. They are Arginex (6 tablets per day), Cataplex E (6 tablets per day), and Cyruta-Plus (9 tablets per day).
If the prostate gland has not been removed, we add Prostate (3 tablets per day), and Immuplex (6 tablets per day). Monitor your success by measuring your PSA every 3 months. If your cancer is very aggressive—that is, taken hold and spread—and if you absolutely need hormone therapy, Triple Hormone Blockade has the best record of success.
Find out about these protocols and other information about prostate cancer in our flyer. Just send a self-addressed, stamped (with two stamps) envelope and say PROSTATE. We will send our flyer to you immediately.
And when it comes to research proving that aggressive treatment is the way to go? Take this with a grain of salt- and with a good, solid, phytonutrient protocol for the best results.
